Changing habits
Some behaviours or long-time habits can be hard to change. We are often told to “just do it” or “don’t think about it”. Using our willpower can work for some people but, for most of us, it is just simply a struggle.
We know we want to kick a habit and change for the better, but something always seems to get in the way and stops us.
Often we feel like we have failed and that just makes us feel even worse.
Why do I keep failing?
Put simply, one part of our mind, our conscious, is saying
“I want to stop nail biting /smoking/overeating”
but another part of our mind, our subconscious, is responding by saying “But I need to do this to help me unwind”. If I said that the conscious part of us is only responsible for about 5% of our actual decision making and responses and the other 95% is left to the subconscious to decide—guess which side, in most cases, is going to win? No need to feel a failure at all!
For example, if I were to ask you not to think about a beautiful red sailing boat bobbing up and down on a crystal blue sea under a warm summer sun and clear blue sky, most people will actually call that to mind and then try not to think about it - but it is too late you have already have.
How many non-smokers walk round saying that they do not need a cigarette?
So, how could hypnosis help?
When you are focused and relaxed, the deeper levels of your mind are more open to suggestion. Positive statements, or suggestions, can then be given to your powerful subconscious mind. These suggestions will become part of you, if you accept them. It is a bit like running anti-virus software on your computer. It helps to identify problems that may exist, gets rid of any bugs in the system and allows you to concentrate on using your computer to its maximum potential rather than continuously waiting for it to shut down in the middle of an operation.
The hypnotic suggestions will provide you with new ways of accomplishing your goals, removing your unwanted habits or solving your problems.
