Articles

Some of the articles that I have had published in professional journals on workplace bullying:

Mimetic Desire and Workplace Conflict in Counselling at Work Spring 2010
In the words of the Rick Hughes, editor:
"Damian Stoupe adds to the 'organisational dynamics debate by reflecting on 'mimetic desire' as a means to illustrate how bullying behaviours can emerge from potentially innocuous competition among work colleagues (p20).  It makes a lot of sense.  Damian helps us to consider bullying in a different light and his article adds to his rich contribution on the subject.  In an ever-competitive workplace environment (more so when people are worried about keeping their jobs and willing to work for less) and in a rampant consumerist society it's useful to consider when desires move to needs."

Workplace Bullying in Counselling at Work Spring 2009
This article begins to introduce the work of Rene Girard and his concepts of mimetic desire into the workplace bullying arena
"a welcome back to Damian Stoupe (p30) who presents a well considered and timely update on workplace bullying.  Damian is becoming quite an authority in this field and it's great to have his finger on the pulse of what's happening out there."

Bullying in Counselling at Work Winter 2007/2008:
This is article supports the workshop (presentation below) delivered to the National Conference of what is now BACP Workplace.
"Damian Stoupe ... presents a powerful case for considering the language we use to discuss bullying and how this can impact on the cause and effect.  He refers to three bully descriptors and reflects back to his workshop delegate feedback to suggest ways to work with a bully."

Bulllying at Work in Counselling at Work Spring 2006
This was my first published article on the emotional fall out of workplace bullying on individuals.  It also provided hints on dealing with bullying the workplace.
"Damian Stoupe ... reflects on the emotional fallout for victims of bullying and presents ways that workplace counsellors can offer support."

MSc Dissertation - The big one so far!

This was a  small scale interview based study with defended subjects in Wells, Shepton Mallet and across Somerset, to investigate the impact of an accusation of workplace bullying in small businesses. Mimetic theory (primarily the works of Rene Girard and Jean-Michel Oughourlian) provided the framework for the analysis of the interviews. It considered the impact of the accusation and factors that influence the reaction including; childhood experiences of parental or school bullying, experiences of bullying in small businesses as recipient or accused, the role of insecurity, the mythology of bullying and bullying in small businesses. The findings suggests a four-phased dynamic response; Emotional, Expressive, Reflective and Adaptive, to any accusation. It concludes that organisations should be aware of the potential impact accusations on future bullying episodes and the influence of mimesis on individual and group behaviours, from the perspective of those accused and the recipients of, bullying behaviours.

Key words:  workplace bullying, Rene Girard, Jean-Michel Oughourlian, mimetic desire

The counsellor as a researcher
